August 8-12

February 5, 2010

UPDATE:
Oh, I had really hoped we’d have tickets available and so much more done by now, but I know everyone reading this probably understands how volunteer organizations work: SLOWLY. In this case, Ivanna is the holdup because her real job is super busy. So please be patient. Tickets will go up and this site will be fully 2010-ified IN FEBRUARY.

Volunteers - check this out!
Vendors, please hang on to your hats. If you’ve emailed planning, you will be getting vendor info soon.

From the Super Messy Desk of Ivanna S. Pankin, RollerCon GM:

Okay, recovery from RollerCon 2009 is complete and planning for the 6th Annual RollerCon: 2010 is in full swing. This website as of today is about 85% old shiz and getting updated as we speak. But here are some quick updates!

2010 dates still Wed, July 28 - Sun, Aug 1st.
Ticket prices: Lots cheaper this year, on sale soon
Host Hotel: Tropicana Resort & Casino
Skating Venue: LV Sports Center
Tracks: Hopefully modular flooring this year - still in negotiations
Daytime shuttle: Enclosed, AIR CONDITIONED

Keep an eye peeled for lots of website updates in the coming weeks, including open RC registration, early bird specials, a link to get reserved at the hotel (including super cheap but very limited Garden Rooms) and MORE.

Things you can do right NOW:

See you all in 7 months!

RollerCon 2010

RollerCon 2010 Roller Derby Convention is July 28th through August 1st

WHAT’S UP?
You probably already know there are about 250 of us that work together to make RC happen and we all want to know what you’re thinking. PLEASE TAKE OUR ONLINE SURVEYS Part 1 and Part 2 and win an MVP pass to RC10! We’re looking to figure out what events you love, and collect your feedback and (reasonable) suggestions for how to make the convention better (um, swimming pool at the Sport Center is not in our budget, unfortunately). We’ll share your answers and they could earn you a chance at a free pass and even more cool stuff!

In the meantime, there’s plenty of new stuff going on with the site this year, including a photo gallery page, here.

We also got the stats up from the Challenges, thanks to the hard work of our Stats Army. Check them out and start planning your challenge for next year.

We’re also putting up class handouts and seminar presentations from the coaches and leaders that send them to us. If you led a class or seminar, send us a PDF and we’ll put them up so everyone can check them out! We’ve already got Medusa’s Ninja Blocking and Marquee’s Pack Work Triangle, plus all the WFTDA’s good advice about how to prepare your league for Whip It impact Oct 9th. Check them out here:

Believe it or not, I know we say we’ll start early every year, but I swear to god, planning for 2010 has already started, Changes you can look for include a whole new system we’re cleverly calling “HR” to handle staffing (how do we think this stuff up?), even better ways to hire and compensate our crew, a far smarter automated system for inviting coaches back, posting their training plans and pre-registering for classes, and super early bird ticket prices, just to name a few things.

We also took the complaints we got really seriously, so even though there isn’t much we can do to make Las Vegas less like the third rung of Hell’s Microwave oven on “high,” we did put it out there that we’d be willing to move (I thought San Diego would be a nice place!). But you have so far been overwhelmingly in favor of staying at the 3rd Rung of Hell, so we’re looking into at least one standard tourist-type air-conditioned bus for daytime shuttling, closer hotels that will provide less sweaty travel time to go skate (with a bigger, nicer pool with waterfalls - huh? Did I say that? Don’t quote me; it’s never sure til the contract is signed), and more ways to help beat the overwhelming heat if we do stay in the city of Lost Wages.

We’re also overhauling our registration process to cut down on the amount of time you have to screw around figuring out what line to be in. If you have great ideas about that, we want to know. We already have some really good ones that we think will make it half as big a hassle, but we’re looking to totally eliminate the hassle portion, so get ready to clue us in on that survey I mentioned!

We’re looking forward to some changes that are going to create a pretty unprecedented change, as well: cheaper tickets. That’s right, I’m on record with it. We’ve figured out a way to tighten our belts that will make tickets significantly cheaper next year - namely to dump the incredibly expensive banquet. We’ll miss the banquet a little, because it is fun to have dinner with 1000 of your best friends. But we won’t miss the 6-digit bill (not including decimals) that the dinner costs, and we hope you don’t, either.

So - before you forget, jot down your RollerCon 2010 suggestions and comments about 2009, and keep your eyes open for the survey. And if you want to be part of the RollerCon crew next year, start figuring out your days off. We’re looking at July 28 through Aug 1 next year (it seems like a tasty weekend; we’ll keep it).

And keep one eye peeled at rollercon.com for more info and planning starting in the next few weeks.

Thanks everyone for an outstanding RC09!!

Sincerely,
Ivanna S. Pankin,
RollerCon Chief Bottle-Washer
… on behalf of the whole overworked, undercocktailed crew!
